    OBD1 crank sensor with OBD2 wiring

    I am asking this for a friend. He has a Euro 328 engine that hes trying to install in a 98 Z3 Both are 2.8L but the Euro engine uses the front crank sensor not the one in the rear of the block like the US engines have.
    Both sensors use 3 wires but are different colors. can the obd1 sensor work with the obd2 wiring? and does anyone know the color wires that need to go together?

    nope... sensors are not compatable. The wiring and computer needs to be the same as the sensor. This is how it works for the us engines at least.

        The big problem is that the engine was sold to a BMW dealer to be installed in a US Z3 with a bad engine. The engine is already installed but the problem is the sensor. Either I figure a way to make it run or I have to pay to have them remove this engine.. TIA

          How is it your problem that the dealership doesn't know how to install this engine?

            you cant mix obd1 and obd2 sensors on the same car... the computer wont know what the hell is going on...

              The sensor that is mounted at the front of the engine is a European M52 specific crank position sensor. It is not used with the M50 or M50TU.

              Both the European M52 and the US M52 use a Siemens MS41.x DME.

              I assume the replacement engine is a Euro aluminum block engine? If so, it probably doesn't have the hole at the rear of the block for the rear mounted crank position sensor, right?

              I am sorry I can't be any more help, I don't have the European ETM.

                the engine has no hole in the block.. both sensors are 3 wire. even if the sensors were wired right the car still wont run?

                      I finally found the Euro ETM in my collection of files. Here are the two images that pertain to this discussion.

                      Of course, if the number of teeth on the crank differ from the rear mounted tone wheel, then it won't work.

                      MS41.0 (Euro M52)

                      Now, I am not sure how to read the above diagram for the Hall Sensor, because there is no indication of what is Vss, Ground, and Signal. Anyone care to comment?

                      My guess is the ground color won't change -- BR to BR

                      If you do it by DME pin to DME pin (48 to 48, 83 to 83) it is:

                      Z3 harness to Euro M52 CKPS, guess #1
                      Yellow to Red/Yellow
                      Black to Yellow

                      I'd check the resistances between pins just to see if the abovementioned suggestions are reasonable.
