    S52 swap

Hey guys, not to beat a dead horse. I know this has been gone over numerous times, but i tired searching and it is hard to find it all in one place. I kind of need to know asap, because i found a s52 engine wire harness and ecu for 1600 local. I know I would need the transmission. What other parts would i need to complete the swap. Motor mounts, drive shaft, e30 lsd... If you have a link with all this info that would be great so you dont have go over it again. Thank you in advance, and I am sorry to ask a question that has been asked multiple times.

just to help your asapness....unless you are good wiring you won't use the s52 harness or ecu (you also need ewsII module, transponder module, original key->has a chip) most common swaps include the s52 engine and all the software and wiring from the S50 engine. read the sticky at the top of this forum. or pm me if you need info on the s52 obdii wiring.
      No more e30s for me.

Then you kind of need to pay someone to do it.

The swap. If want to bring it to Atlanta, I'd be happy to give you a quote.

To tell you exactly what to do or to just do it for you.

There's no one central place that has all of the info. Even if you buy the ORCA CD, read every page of this forum etc, you will have unique problems. You need to take a lot of time to familiarize yourself with all the various problems people run into, and then you can come and ask people for free advice on your unique problems that you WILL have. Otherwise you're not going to get a whole lot of help, it's too much energy to expel for someone who wants it all spoonfed fast and free.

I'm not trying to sound antagonistic btw, I've been at all stages of this swap, from knowing nothing and looking for someone to hold my hand, to being finished and annoyed with the same dozen questions, for which answers are readily available. I'm just trying to explain how this feels from the other side, so you don't think people here are too stupid to answer your questions. You may not appreciate this now, but you will when you've put in the work to learn what to do, solve all of your issues and go for that first drive, after dumping more time (and usually money) than you ever thought was reasonable, and come here to see a post saying "hey I don't feel like spending so much time to figure all this shit out, can you just tell me what to do? I need to know asap"

I could easily get it done, I work at a bmw shop. I just dont want to have to ask the techs how to do everything. I want to do it as much by myself as possible.

I understand your point of view, but you also have to see mine. It is a weekend, most shops are closed, and mine is. I have come across a deal that I think is too good to pass up on. Before I make the decision, I just wanted to make sure I would not be over my head. I dont need to know all the small things, like you said there is always something different. I was just curios as to what drive shaft, motor mounts, oil ran, radiator, and ecu system I should use. I understand people who have worked hard on this swap before, but I dont understand why it is so hard to help soemone out. I am active on many boards, and when I could help I am more than glad to. I never try to rub it in people faces or whatnot. Ill paysoem one for some info if I had to, no one ever asked. Anyone accept paypal? I know you people are not too stupid to help me out. I would not have asked if I thought so. And I never said, I said hey I don't feel like spending so much time to figure all this shit out, can you just tell me what to do? I need to know asap" I said that i have tried searching. I saw that thread from the post below BTWm but it is like 60 pages. I dont mind putting in the time and effort to know, but I have/had to know soon before the motor gets picked up by someone else. I dont know why that offends people so much. I ment no disrespect by saying ASAP. Thanks.

Why didn't you say so in the first place? In your original post you say find "it all", as in you want us to sit here and describe every single step, what to use, where to put it etc etc etc.

If you want the short version there are posts in the very first one or two pages of the big thread of what people used. Basically, installing the S52 with OBDII is an unnecessary pain (I know a certain someone will disagree... who has posted in this thread :P), ideally you'll want to find the brain, intake/TB/maf (the intake will give you 25-30 horse boost btw), wiring harness and the sensors from an M50 (well you should buy new sensors anyway). Any M50 will do, even ones with EWS (you just get an EWS delete chip). You can reuse the Getrag but it's more annoying. The E36 ZF that comes with this engine fits trivially, you'll find out which mounts etc. It uses the M3 driveshaft too (it has to be the 4 bolt rear one, not the CV joint 6 bolt). Radiator needs to be E36 or 88+ E30 (if your car is 87- then you need to relocate the coolant reservoir or use an M42 rad with a built in tank, but don't do that). Oil pan (as well as pump pickup) is from an M50 525i. Exhaust is a bit of a pain. I'm trying to minimize it by using stock midpipes and an E36 catback but I'm having some clearance issues. Most people just pay an exhaust shop to fabricate something from the headers to the cat and to the catback. That's it really, there are bits and pieces inbetween but they're just specifics of a project this big.

If you have time and are technically inclined, this is a "simple" project, there's just a lot to do (it's an engine swap...).

BTW I hope it goes without saying that, as with buying anything used (especially an engine which you can't know the condition of without tearing it down), be careful with anything that sounds too good to pass up (odds are it's too good not to).

You'll also need to do something about the brake booster. Some people claim they can make the stock one work but generally, the consensus (of which I am part) is that it's too big to clear the intake and you either use a dinkier one or a double chambered one from the E30 iX/E34 M5/E32 735i (probably cheapest option, since they're a dime a dozen, and it also comes with the same 25mm master cylinder that the M5 has, which you'll need for proper TB->maf boot clearance).

There's only a little bit of fabrication you need to do, and I guess you don't really NEED to do any of it, it's just good for doing some things properly. It's basically like putting together a really big kit.

                          ...

Thanks guys you have been tons of help so far.

I am about to pull the trigger. Here is what I have gathered so far

-Motor- Wire Harness and DME for $1600.00 shipped. It is obd II and off of an automatics car, but we can turn off ews, and change the s/w to manual. They can make it work at my job.
                          - Tranny and drive shaft from my job- $250.00. Tranny from a 95 325, drive shaft from a m3
                          - M50 mainfold from a friend- $50.00

From the big things all i need now are mounts, which I heard e30 ones work? I also need the m50 oil pan, clutch and flywheel, and the brake booster system you metnioned earlier. I will know if I am doing this soon.
