    ideas on building m50 turbo

since i have a m20 b23 in my car i dont think you can do much with it so im going to drop in a m50. i prefer a garrett turbo and je pistons. i would like at least 400rwhp. can any one put their 2 cents in? thx

400 whp should be alright on the stock block with a mls gasket, studs and a really good tune.

      potential of the m50

well i can get good prices on garrett turbos and je pistons. so why not go all out? if i can get 400 whp with a stock block, can you imagine it fully built. so any sugestions on a nice size turbo and pistons. i want to be able to run A LOT of boost safely. how much potential does the m50 really have?

      after all more boost=more fun

Im not sure about boost pressures and longevity.

Get a gt3582r and make or have someone make you a nice top mount manifold and go from there.

Check out bimmerforums.com forced induction section. Much more info on turbocharging m50s

It sounds like you should visit the FI forum at www.bimmerforums.com. There are a LOT of folks with turbo M50/S50 engines that can tell you everything you need to know about what setups make power and what parts you need for what you're looking for.

400 whp shouldnt be hard to reach. post some build pics of whatever your going to do once it gets started.

that is the reason im doing it. before i had my e30s i had a e21 with a m20 but i gave it to my dad. then he decides he wants to turbo it and my bro is doing a sr20 swap in his 240. so i guess they think they are going to have fast cars. that is until mine is done. ill post pics as soon as i get engine stuff which is hopefully soon.

ill check out bimmerforums for more info...thx for letting me know

Here is my current build, just ordered everything yesterday :)

                    Garrett 60-1 T04S compressor, T3 turbine. .70 a/r - .82 a/r
                    Bosch EV1 440cc(42lb) Injectors
                    ARP Head Stud kit
                    VAC MLS .140 Headgasket
                    Ebay 25x12x3 IC
Polished Aluminum Ebay IC piping kit w/T bolt clamps
                    50mm Wastegate
                    Blitz BOV

I'm gonna be building my own top mount manifold, I'll be using BMW SOBs merge collector and Multiplex's CNCed flange. I still have a whole bunch of stuff to get, but I have the major parts at this point...I'm hoping for around 430RWHP....without getting into the bottom of the motor at all.

sounds like a pretty nice setup. and it doesn't seem like its going to empty out your pockets either!!! is the turbo your running much different from the gt3582r? i saw the quite a few people were using this turbo on their builds. what sort of head work?cams? wish you luck on reaching the 430whp mark without getting into the bottom end!!!

It is similar in size to a GT35R, not sure the exact specs of that turbo though. Mine isn't a ball bearing, but thats no big deal...just didn't feel like spending all that money quite yet. Even so, mine is still a genuine Garrett...and it's polished

No head work planned, but who knows what I'll do once I get the motor apart. I might go to M3 cams at some point...

As of today I have ~$1900 into the setup, and I plan to spend around another $2000.

With a HG that thick, 400+ whp should be no sweat on a turbo that big.

What are you doing for tuning?

Not sure yet. You guys do remote OBDI tuning right?
