anyone here go through california smog with an obd1 s52

that you passed off as an s50?
my car is finally running and once i get everything buttoned up, i need to renew my registration and get it smogged.
i'm going to take a chance and just show up at a test only smog station and see if they'll pass it. if they don't i'll have to go to the referee station and pass my 98 motor off as a 95. visually everything looks like an s50 - valve cover, intake, etc. just wondering how thorough they are at the referee stations and if anyone has done it recently. thanks.

surebimmer has done the same to his s52 (s50 lookalike), dunno if he plans to try and ref it or not, i say just try to smog it, and see what happens.

I running a S52 converted to OBD 1 but have untill Oct untill i'm due for smog. If i'm not test only then i'm good to go. But if i'm test only then i might try and get mine signed off by the BAR. Here a picture of my s52 under to hood.

why not take some of the plastic bits off the engine when you go for this test? it might make it look a bit older if they seem some aluminum.

Ya if I have to take it to the CA BAR then I would take off the M Power cover. We'll see. Anyone gone to the CA BAR? I know some on here not to long ago sold a s52 swap car in san Diego area. Anyone?

I passed off my M52 as an S50, and when the M52 ate a valve, I passed off my S52 as an S50.

so you went through the referee process? they didn't look for a vin on the engine or anything?

it will likely be a couple of weeks.

I did go through the referee process, and they did not check the vin on the block. I didn't even have an "M Power" valve cover, or the green top injectors, but I still passed it off as a 3.0L M3 engine. Maybe I got lucky.

Try passing it through the referee and see what happens. It took a few times, not because of the visual inspection, but because of the emissions.

That's good info. Can you tell us what the were looking for? Were they comparing against diagrams? Pictures?

What did you do for an intake/airbox?

the smog referee does not expect you to have an airbox on the car, since the engine was never intended for the chassis. A cone filter will do.
