Don't know anything about how to check just the chip. The shop just said their OBDI M3 swapped 318Ti wouldn't start when they tried my ECU.

Since the chip is just replaced on the motherboard with the perf chip, I'm guessing there is something internal with the chip programming.

I still don't understand how or why the 413 Red Label can have EWS issues, since all I've read on the swap forum says they don't have that feature...but I'm not going to worry about that, I just want an ECU that will run the engine :)

so was this the cause of your "no start" problem? the ecu? I'm having similar issues and can't get the injectors to fire. I have a red label 413 from a 93 325is.

It Starts! Used another stock 413 ECU and it started right up, so it appears something in the chipped ECU is bad. Will try to figure that out now...

I had this issue for a while. I bought an EWS delete chip from Bimmerworld and it worked sometimes and didn't work others. I finally deduced that it was my chip that was the problem for sure. Bimmerworld assured me it wasn't the chip, I finally convinced James to send me a new one (after three conversations), sure enough a new EWS delete chip and the same ECU and it's been good ever since. Obviously they took the old chip back, still didn't believe it was my problem but whatever. Point is, not all chips work the way they are "supposed" to
