    CA smog

    Hey Gang,

I'm about to get a e30 with a s52 here from MN to California. I've never dealt with smogging an out of state car, let along one with a different motor.

Has anybody had to do deal with a smog rep here in CA? If you have any info- please let me know.
    Thanks!

hey ash, it's carl. you came to my house in sacramento when steve was visiting.
i'm taking my car to a referee station today to get smogged and inspected. if it goes well, i'll be in touch with everything you will have to do. i'm very familiar with steve's car, so i'll fill you in.

Hey Hugh, after you do that can you post a thread about it. I know that many of us in CA neglect to tell the state that we have swapped motors in fear of not being able to register. But if the ref process is easy enough I think more of us might go that route. TIA

It passed! Man am I stoked.
                      It was a painless process.
I showed up for my appointment time, told them that I did an engine change with a 95 3.0 M3 motor. They looked at the car for about 20 minutes and then ran it on the dyno. It didn't pass the tailpipe test the first time, so they let it idle a while and then re-ran it after the cat got hot and it passed.
Basically, here is what I have

s52 with s50 valve cover. I did this for visual reasons and so i could run the proper cranckase vent with the 2 hoses off of it.
e30 charcoal cannister with the e36 evap purge valve mounted on the side with all lines in place
s52 exhaust manifolds with the o2 ports and air injection ports welded shut
                      k&n cone air filter
magnaflow cat with 1 o2 sensor

my swap looks pretty clean, which i think helped a lot. they said they get all sorts of junk in there, and when your work is clean, it shows that you haven't cut corners and probably makes their job easier.
i've got the bar label on the shock tower now so i can smog it as a 95.
if anyone else has questions, pm me or post here.

Very good info! Sounds like your swap is just like mine. I did the valve cover cover swap as well. I have until Oct for smog so I'll see what happens then.

How do you setup that kind of inspection?

I'm up for smog (my tags are actually expired since the beginning of the month). I haven't had to get smogged since the swap but I would like to get the swap approved.
