    Valve Job for M50 head

The guy quoted me $500 to do the work.

The head will come completely disassembled except for valve springs (which includes retainers, and valves themselves).

Now the price includes re-assembly and a wash...

A friend of mine is telling me that he is charging way too much.

    What do you guys think?

Sounds like a good price. Is that with new valve guide's?

      Nope I don't think so.

I will be supplying all of the parts, I'm just talkin straight labor here.

I mean I've checked out a couple of sites and I've seen job's for V8's costing around $270 and $130 for DOHC inline 4's...I feel like I'm paying double the cost here.

500$ is waaay too much to just recut the seats and valves. Even with installing all new valve guides thats too much.

I think I paid somewhere between 100 and 150$ to recut valves and seats and install new exhaust valve guides on my S14.

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

This is what I was thinking.

I'm going to speak with the guy that works there and be reasonable about it.

I don't mind paying for quality work but DOUBLE the price is a bit much.

Damn...I mean this is the first I'm bringing in stuff to the machine shop, so I completely clueless as to what normal pricing is.

I feel like one of those people that doesn't know shit when bringing in the car to the mechanic :(

Whatever, I'm going talk to the guy and ask him why its so expensive.

                Damn. That's expensive.
My machinist, who everybody around here uses, charges less if it's your first time getting stuff done. He's like a crack dealer. You blow up your motor and have him put it back together and he charges you more the second time than the first time.

Fuck I feel like it would be cheaper to SHIP the head somewhere and get the work done, and then ship it back.

How much would your guy charge? I'm assuming he does quality work...

I can ship this thing using the companies UPS account...it will be dirt to send there and back.

Ha. I think he charged me like 150 bucks for decking, multi-angle, valve lapping, and checking the guides. Unfortunately, he had to pull the cam tray studs out and the valve cover bolts out and I had to go back and assemble everything. I also didn't have to replace anything since everything but the head casting, cams, and cam trays are new.

Wow...would he be interested in doing mine?

                      I'm willing to ship it!
