    is this needed

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...42&hg=11&fg=35

    referring to #11

It's my understanding that this goes to the airbox, but since most aren't running an airbox.....

I don't want to spend another $50 unless it's needed.

Thanks and sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm just trying to get this thing finished before bimerfest.

Are you running the coolant lines to the throttle body? That thermostat just controls the flow of hot coolant to the throttle body when the air temperature is low, to prevent the throttle body from freezing up.

Being in Cali, I doubt you'll ever encounter weather cold enough to need that. It's common to disconnect all that stuff up here on cars that don't have that thermostat (aka VW VR6's).

    Short answer: don't get it.

sorry to hear. Whenever i see a part that is new to me, I always question its need in my car. Perhaps you should adopt my attitude on that (will save you some money and make the car lighter :D).

                You totally need that thing!!!!!!!

just kidding. i did the same as golde30. Now im not running lines to the t-body at all. We'll see if i have problems in the winter time but i kinda doubt it.

ok i'll chime in and clarify for those who don't know

This is a thermostat that lets the hot coolant circulate through the body when the atmospheric temp is low and shuts the coolant passage through the TB when it's warm outside.
The rationale for this is to prevent the TB flap from freezing in the TB when it's cold and moist outside (apparently it can be a problem in cold climates)

removing this part#11 (thermostat) from the loop will cause teh coolant to run through the TB all the time while heati ng it up to the temp of a running engine (will heat up the intake air, probably not by much tho). So if you live in mild climate or don't drive car during winters (like myself), simply connect (bypass) the two TB hoses with a small piece of pipe or block off the nipple in the middle of the head and the corresponding spider-hose outlet
