    Tailshaft won't fit! Help!!

    OK so here's a new one;

    Current powertrain:
    M52B25 Alu block on E36 arms and 535i rubber mounts (same part number as the green mounts), Getrag 260 and a 3.46 open diff from an E30 323i Auto.
    I was comfortable in the beleif that I seamlessly join the whole show with a tailshaft from any E30 6-cyl manual. Bought an E30 325i tailshaft and it's too long (slid together as far as it will go at the centre spline)! F*%K!

    Now for some measurements;
    The 325i tailshaft is stated to be 1489mm long (BMW parts info from workshop).
    The distance from gearbox output flange to diff input flange is 1500mm. The rubber flexdisk is 30mm.
    FAIL!

    This really sucks, I havent heard anyone else have this problem and I'm sure there were a few of you with the same powertrain. I really dont want to have to get the tailshaft shortened (expensive and will probably be out of balance) and worse still I was hoping to finally have the car runing in about two weeks.
    I have access to the following tailshafts:
    325i man (Too long)
    318i man (Even longer)
    318i auto (Short)

    Can any of these be mixed and matched to fit?

    So I dont know whats going on. Any info would be hugely appreciated.

    HELP!!!

      You are discovering the one great truth in motor swapping... There is no "one great truth" in motor swapping.

      You motor is in a slightly different position obviously. I'm not sure why as you seem to have all the right parts.

        Are there any differences in the diff input flanges? i.e. 323 longer than 325?

        As far as I know the US never got 323s, which could explain why the problem has never come up before.

        Looking at the ETK, some 323s had a 1468mm driveshaft, yet as far as I can tell everything to do with the tranny is the same as the 325...which makes me wonder if the the input flange on the 323 diff might be longer, and that's why you get problems in combination with a 325 driveshaft. I dunno, just a thought.

          Yeah at this stage I'll beleive everything is plausible!
          I also had a look around and started finding random driveshaft lengths I didnt know about. I think I gotta visit a wrecker with a tape-measure... At least there are options.

            your too short, and im too long, im living proof that e36 318i shaft does not work, 69mm too long.
