    questions about issues

    Hey Guys,

I have been having some issues with my car and wanted to get some ideas as to what it could be.

My car will start up and run for about 5 seconds and then just die. it begins to run rough and tries to regain but just stalls flat on its face. It does this no matter if its hot or cold and usually at random. It has started to do it more often and I am at a loss for what it is. It will take a few starts of it doing this before it runs right and then will run very well. My car also sort of hunts for idle at times when I come to a stoplight.

I am starting to think that its the crank sensor, its just about the only thing I havent replaced.

The car will also sort of hesitate and I can notice it mostly around 4k+ I was thinking that it may be timing thats causing the issues up top.

The car hit 6800 rpms today and just cut out and on its way up I could feel it hitting little "bumps" in the revs as it climbs up.

Ive seen symptoms that are identical to these that go away with attention to the crank sensor.

I talked with BMWSOB and he told me to check the FPR, I have not looked into this yet. I will take a look tomorrow.

Would the crank sensor throw a code if it was going bad? I am showing 1444 so there ar no codes right now.

Fixed the crank sensor issues a while back but car still has hot start idle issues. I am beginning to think the ecu is going bad..... sometimes it will hot start just fine and idle a bit high while other times it will run for about 5 seconds and then just die. restart it and its back to normal.

Are you running a chip? Is it an OBDI converted car? Have you run the codes???

I'd check the DME temperature sender (blue). The amount of labor involved in pulling it and hot water / resistance testing it etc., you're probably better off spending $18 and replacing it.

Normally I don't like the idea of throwing parts at a situation unless it's warranted, but the DME temperature sender fails often enough on E36s to replace it anyway.
