CEL Code 1271 , rough running

    yet another post be me....

Just started throwing a code today. 1271-

"An open-circuit or ground fault in the ignition wiring has occurred with an ignition coil."

I was throwing this code last week so I bought new coils from Bav Auto. The car will start to run really rough from about 2500 on. It barely makes any power and probably is not running on all cylinders.

The plugs are new, coils are new.... What else could be the problem? Wiring, grounding?

    Thanks

Just pulled the coils and plugs.

The plugs look to be fine, Bosch Platinum Fuzion 4503s.....

I figured one of my plugs would have been fouled but they all look ok.

I guess I need to go get a timing light or something and see which coil is having issues.

Check the resistance of the coils. Use the 1st and 3rd pins on the coils themselves. They should all read the same (about 1 ohm I believe).

        Another possiblity is fuel.

When I first started my car it wasn't running on all 6. For me it turned out to be one bad injector.

Try listening to each injector to hear the ticking they make when they are firing. I ended up finding one injector that wasn't firing and replaced it. Use a screwdriver to touch the injector and put your ear on the other end of the screwdriver.

I will check that as well. Its weird because I drove around for 20 minutes and then the problem started up. Its been fine for 3 days of driving (since I replaced the coils).

I am getting between .8 and 1 omhs per coilpack.

All fuel injectors are firing. It runs great at idle.

idle started to be really bad on startup, now I cant start it and the fuel pump is not coming on. I ran 12 volts from the battery to the pump and it worked. Does the fuel pump rely on the crank sensor to turn itself on?

ok I found the issue with the idle problems and stalling on startup - fuel pump relay was bad.

Before I go buying any more parts I am getting it dynoed (next week) to see what the a/f ratios are and what its putting down. Once I see that I will go from there.

                  I appreciate all the help.

after thinking about it. do you have the small ground wire that attaches to the valve cover and #6 cyl coil pack?

Nope, I dont have any of those ground wires. When I first bought this car I asked about those and was told not to worry about it by a couple people on this forum. Think I should go ahead and add them?

id give em a try. i know there are 2-3 of them, i think the more important one is the one that attaches to the #6.

Went for a drive today with a local group of people. For about half the time my car was unable to get past 2500-3000rpms. Each time the same code would show up- 1271.

Car also ran pretty hot, was getting up to 200 degrees F. I have the low temp thermo in there but I think the car needs an electric fan and the help from a new radiator.

I am going to order the ground straps this week, fpr and a new crank sensor, hopefully I see an improvement.

Any water in the spark plug holes?
