    Gearing options

Hey guys, I want to go with some shorter gears and wanted to check my options.

I'm using the e36 ZF with my swap, and a 3.25 LSD.

I was thinking a 3.46 ring and pinion from an e24/e28, but I don't know if that will really shorten the gears enough.

I originally had a 4.10 open and it wasn't drivable because 1st was soooooo short, but how would a 3.73 be???

Also does anyone know if there is a 3.64 ring an pinion available from any e30/e24/e28??? I think that would be a decent upgrade but still drivable, since I DD my car.

    Please discuss.

Just work the math. Figure out what rpm you could live with for your most common cruising speeds and pick the diff closest to it. I wouldn't want anything shorter than 3.25, and it's a track car. I wasn't even a big fan of 3.73 with the Getrag.

I've got a Getrag 250 and a 3.25 rear end and can't imagine anything shorter. i still spin at about 3k at 70-75 and wouldn't want any higher rpms than that

I wouldn't go over a 3.46 with that. I've got a 3.73 with the E30 260 trans and I'd like to go to a 3.91 for just that little bit.

          3.25/3.46/3.64

All of those are pretty easy to find in the e30 medium case.

Just finished my swap a week or two ago (using e30 getrag 260), and I left the 4.10 lsd in there just to see if I could live with it. 1st gear is preeeeety useless, I'm thinkin the same thing as Mr 325: 3.91 is probably the right choice if using the getrag 260. Anybody got one for me?

You think its bad with the e30 tranny try a 4.10 with the e36 zf!

I red-lined 1st at 21 mph at 7200! (but the torque was fucking ridiculous between 2nd-5th!)

I think a 3.73 is what most people use with the e30 getrag.

                  I believe the M Roadster (Z3) came with a 3:64 LSD.

I'm using a Getrag 260. I had a 4:10 LSD in for a year. That gear ratio was too short. I just installed a 3:73 LSD and I think it's perfect.
