Is there a 50 state turbo kit out there for a m50? I know I could run the dinan supercharger or the mechtech turbo kit. Is there any other options.

depends, do you like driving your car? then go supercharged.
unless you have a profound knowledge of turbo setups, wiring, using a standalone feul managment system IE vems, ms, etc, or plain old just have a shitload of money. If the last choices dont apply than you will probably destroy the motor very quickly.
This is like one of thoes "if you have to ask" questions. If you have to ask which is better, you shouldint be doing either.
you can get a ton more gains out of a turbocharger, but the supercharger is very easy to set up. Supercharging is probably cheaper depending on which route you go.

Well I want to know what else is out there for me to use when it comes to building a smog legal car that is the purpose of this thread. So far those are the only two kits I’ve found that are ca compliant. I’m leaning to the dinan kit. I personally don’t like turbo cars. But I’m looking for the biggest hp gain I can get in a ca compliant form thats all that makes me consider a turbo is the larger gains..Last edited by 416stroker; 07-06-2008, 12:11 AM.84 318I Delphin RIP

^^ not really. untrue on a lot of levels. depends on what power you're trying to accomplish..you could go eitherway on this alone. then what budget and how you'd like your car to drive. i personally get a kik out of the N/A feel hence supercharging is the way to go for me 'NEEDS'. i sort of dislike the sudden surge in power from a mediocre setup. No more e30s for me.

It is VERY hard for a SC to break out of the 400 whp range. A turbo has no problem getting up to 500 on stock internals. My 2.9L Build!

Well to crank more boost out of the Dinan kit all you would have to do is change the pulley. Centrifugal superchargers have a lot of potential its all in how you set it up. The best part I think is there’s no "lag". Does anyone know if there are any other 50 state legal supercharger kits that don’t cost 6 grand?Last edited by 416stroker; 07-06-2008, 01:16 PM.84 318I Delphin RIP

Twinscrew!!!!!!! I would personally shit on any turbo setup for a nice clean twinscrew setup. New they aren't cheap & AA sells or sold one at one point in time. and picking one up used would be a huge waiting game.......LINK BeLoW:

I understand a proper/effecient turbo setup will give you similar linear boost increase but I like the violence from a big blower and that sexy whine will keep you foot pegged until your hearts beating hard enough to jump from your chest and onto your steering wheel only to hang on for the last few seconds it will be beating!!! hahaha my on personal pref. to each, his own!!! Shit I would even be happy with a roots on my m50. I happen to have a eaton and have considered fabing a mani for it to work... ehh lets get the swap done first...sigpic

Turbo hands down! A proper sized turbo , yet, with a GTBB series you probably won't see almost any lag with a good tope end power, probably more than the twinscrew thing...those blowers stop flowing at high RPM's and start deacreasing the boost as you reach the red line. Turbo won't.Euro M3'87 NogaroSilver/Euro E34 M5 '93/Porsche 993 TT 97' Euro/Porsche 993 Carrera 95' Euro/Skyline R33 GT-R

Turbo. The only other thing you need in a turbo set up is the manifold. All the other big parts still apply. The charge piping is a little longer but w/e
You dont NEED a standalone ems to run a turbo car at all. Once you up the boost by changing your pulleys, who's going to tune it if you dont have a full standalone system and thats the only way to do it? You know you cant safely add boost and not change fuel or timing. What about TRM or Nick G or a few others who will custom tune your chip?
Turbo lag is sometimes the wrong term. Boost threshold is the term most people are thinking of. Boost threshold is where boost is made. I make max boost by 3k rpm and it doesnt feel like a huge surge of power. It just feels like theres way more hp :D
Your limited to what you can install with the whole CARB situation so id suggest SC cause im not aware of a GOOD turbo kit that has a carb cert.
Dont knock a turbo kit unless youve ridden in a well set up car.Last edited by So Live; 07-06-2008, 07:24 PM.-Chris
