Since you're staying OBDII, Did you pick up the secondary air pump too?

I had a similar situation with an m52 that sat for a couple years. The compression was such shit on the first cylinder i went straight to a leakdown test. (which should be your next step). I ended up pulling the head, lapping the valves, dropped a set of s52 cams in it and it put down 220 rwhp.

K, will do. No - Should I look into it? To be honest I haven't at all and dont know the pro's and con's to it (or know anything about it since e30's never came with a secondary one afaik).

wow. Nice numbers on an stock (except cams/sw) n/a m52? maybe good will come out of this, i just want a strong stock motor.

I'm going to do a leakdown right now. Just bought the tester. I've had the motor less than a week and i bought it from somebody over on bf.c who said it was running great... if i do find these problems (it obviously has them) you all think i'm shit outta luck or do i have some slim chance of getting some money back?

-All m50-s52 Vanos heads are the same, just a differece in valvetrain: cams/trays, springs, retainers, etc.

i had a similar issue with my s50, the headgasket was blown, so i tore it down, took the head to a machine shop to pressure test. after they said it was ok, i had them so a valve job and deck the head, then i replaced every gasket/hose on the motor and THEN installed it.

And, some of the early s52's are tapped for the extra cooling temp port.

I'm about to follow in your footsteps. How much did all that run you?

Also, what exactly is "overlapping valves" as was mentioned before??

like mine. I've been told it was only 96's but not sure if there are other years too.
