Interesting way for a clutch to go

So I'm driving back from coaching a hockey camp in Brainerd Minnesota yesterday. Get to Cleveland, clutch in down a hill I think (may have just left it in gear but then this makes less sense). Get back on it, and the car just revs up like it's in neutral. So I think wtf maybe it just popped out of gear. Nope. Nothing in any gear. pull over, put it in first and it just rolls back.

Get towed back to Buffalo (thank god for AAA platinum. Had 1 200 mile tow, and I had to go 189 miles to get home!).

Slave and master cyl are new (2 months old). I can hear the slave working so I'm assuming that's good. It goes into every gear, and I can hear it, so I assume the trans is good. Driveshaft isn't spinning while in gear, so I assume rear end is good.

I'm thinking throw out bearing maybe? I just found it odd that BAM! no nothing.
Ah well, I'm gonna tear it apart tomorrow and find out

You want to sell your touring??

J/k. Must be nice to be able to stay home all day and work on cars! :) Hope you find what it is.

Throw out bearing wouldn't cause that. Sounds like what happens when the center of the clutch disk breaks away from the clutch disk itself. Either that or the tranny has let go.....

disc is new, but nothing else was replaced (motor was out to be boosted before i bought it but prev owner changed his mind).

I coached a hockey camp all week last week, so this week I have off til Friday. I don't always have this much free time ;)

The same thing just happened to me. my problem was the sheer pin that holds the shifter rod in the trans. Good luck.

i can hear it going through the gears though, and I mean I never took it out of 5th when this all happened

It's definitely possible. A few of the cars that have come through our shop for clutch replacement have had a clutch so blown it won't move the car at all, in any gear.

I've seen that before also... a friends racecar literally was fine one lap and all of a sudden he heard a bang and his clutch was gone.

What kind of clutch is it? Proper OEM or some aftermarket? I've heard of kevlar clutches with manufacturing defects let go like that - since the facing is like thick paper, it either grabs like crazy or not at all.

Maybe it could also be a seized t/o bearing (in the foward position)...

The same thing happened to me. Turns out, the spline broke off the clutch disk. When i pulled it apart the splined ring was on the trans input shaft. Brand new sachs clutch too.

did you try and get any warranty? probably not.

I just need another hour and it'll be out, but I worked all day yesterday and today, and my buddy isn't there sundays (my car is at his shop) so I cant get back to work til monday
