Jean, I wanted to get rid of the dual mass flywheel. The 535 clutch is 240mm and matches the custom flywheel. 2kg lighter too than the old flywheel/clutch package. I've driven a e36 M52 with this setup and it's very good!

Gotcha! I got the same clutch with a 533 flywheel, but I was a little surprised to see it on the m52 :)

Time for my update for the year 2010! :D

I've been driving the car 6 months now, about 7k km and it's been bulletproof!

The car will go on stands for the summer (it's my winter dd) and here are some improvements I'm thinking of doing:

          * New exhaust. It's now using stock 325 Cat exhaust which is a somewhat restrictive. I'm thinking of adapting a E36 M3 exhaust since I don't want overly loud system.
          * Better air intake. I thinking of relocating battery to trunk, moving ABS pump to battery tray and making a hole to the pump tray for the intake.
          * LSD. Trying to decide whether to just to add lsd unit to the 3.25 diff I have or maybe also change diff to 3.15 or 3.07
          * Fuel heater. I have a clock-controlled Webasto heater sitting on the shelf which I'm going to install for the next winter.
          * Finally getting rid of the motor oil check control with E34 M50 oil level sender!

            Nice work.

Your Flickr site is about to come in handy for me as I've just picked up a Euro M52 for my project (with a snapped camshaft - yeah, the whole shaft has snapped!) and will be undertaking a similar rebuild. What are those tools in the blue box you bought for "timing gear"?

              looks like a fun project!!
but if i were you i would get an S50 crank and cams 24lb injectors and a 740i MAF then get a custom chip or a dyno tune and you would be sumwhere around 235-250 WHP with the M52 :D
with that crank it makes it a 2.9 stroker and 11.5:1 compression ratio
              jus throwin it out there

oops just realized i posted a little to late lol

Ouch, hopefully there won't be too much metal contamination on the engine!

I bought the toolset from ebay and it has flywheel lock, plates for locking camshafts in the correct spot for timing, wrench for turning vanos gear and the primary chain tensioner bolt - you don't use the normal tensioner while timing.

None of the tools are mandatory, but I got them for convenience and resold them after use.

Doesn't look to be damage from the cam, but the engine is a fucking mess. Around 100,000km old and seriously looks like it's never had an oil change. I was set on rebuilding it, and for the price I paid I am not complaining. Also got a spare head thrown in for beer money (x2 slabs of decent beer).

If that's the case I'd be worried about the cylinders and rings, kinda PITA but i'd slap the head on and do a blow-by test. Reworking alublocks is stupid expensive.

New pistons, rods, refinished crank, hit-tanked/honed block, new oil pump, etc is all on the cards. Not cheap, but it needs to be good for what I have planned for it (it's a trial run of working on M52s while I build a sleeved, forged one with worked head which will cop a Garrett gt40 turbo).
