Which starter with an M20 flywheel?

I think I may have taken a wrong turn when I installed the starter on my M50, as I used the stock M50 starter with the E30 M20 flywheel. Now, when I try to turn the engine over, it sounds like the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. Thinking back, I think I remember reading that you should use the starter that matches the flywheel, but must have had my brain in neutral when I installed the starter.

So, what is the consensus here? Does the starter need to match the flywheel, or do I have a different issue lurking somewhere?
