    Engine Bay

    Hello,

I'm painting my engine bay, and I'm wondering if I removed my old worn out engine foam; is it imperative if I don't put it back in?? This car is my daily driver. Would there be too much heat resonating from the engine coming up through the dash?

(I'm at work so I don't have pics of my car, but when I get home I'll add actual pics of my car. But this is too give an example)

You will get a lot more engine/tranny noise.

You can buy new insulation. I think I got mine for about $125.

You can remove the insulation safely without a noticeable difference in cockpit noise. My brothers M3 had no insulation and engine noise was by no means excessive; a negligable difference from my 318is (with insulation) and an almost identicle engine/exhaust setup.

The plus-side of removing the insulation is the ease of transmission removal if/when you need to change the clutch. It makes getting at those upper tranny bolts much easier.

What about the top three pieces going across the firewall. Mine are all brown and old looking. Are the new ones all black?

I knew the quilt on the chair in the OP looked very familar. That's my car. I bought all new stuff, at dealer discount I think I spent 80 bucks or so.

I hope you didn't mind using your car. I swear it'll be the only time!!!

So there isn't a real difference then?

agreed. ive always taken mine out. also, the insulation traps moisture against the top of the tunnel and will cause rust. ive seen a few "rust free" cars with rot hidden under the insulation.

                          cheers, jason

Jason; good to know you're still around. :D What are you driving now? I know you sold the M50 325e and the 6-throttle henna M3.

                              Thanks,

Great stuff. On a side note; If I'm using a ZF Tranny, and a 3:25lsd which driveshaft do I need. I've looked @ Windsor's unbelievable swap and he had a similar question. I don't have access to a E30M3, and I'm not looking to cut a driveshaft. Would a 96' or better driveshaft work. I understand I need to use the CSB off of my E30
