I believe the S50 weighs around 300 lbs trimmed out with accessories. The transmission weighs around 75 lbs, the clutch and flywheel together weigh around 40 lbs.

Come on Fred. Not even close. M20 weighs ~400lbs.

Id say 420lbs for a S50 fully dressed.

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.

427 for a 2.5 M50, so S50 should be right about the same (little bit heavier). Add about 75 for the ZF trans. It will really depend on what accessories are included.

holy smokes, that's heavy! I forgot about that post; I know I've seen pics before! :D

I've weighed the block (105 lbs), crank (47 lbs), and head (79 lbs), so I guess it makes sense that after adding a pretty heavy alternator, starter, manifold, dual mass flywheel (like 30 lbs!), and clutch, things would add up pretty quickly to 430 lbs!

A lot of that weight comes off easily. A/C compressor and some other bits takes off around 35 (plus another 10 of A/C related parts on the car. 9 pounds off the exhaust manifolds by installing OBD-2 stainless mani's. 20 pounds off the flywheel by getting an aluminum unit.

My 318is was 2580 with the M42 and A/C. With the S50 (no A/C) the car is 2620. That also includes a transmission that is slightly heavier. So with the S50 and heavier transmission, I gained 40 pounds over the M42. You won't gain much at all (if any) over your M20 if you choose the right parts.

Compared to your M20, you won't notice any difference as far as handling if you use lightweight engine parts (flywheel, mani's, etc). You may notice a tendency to oversteer on trackout though. ;)

Kinda makes a very stong argument for the alum M52 at 345lbs versus the iron M5X/S5x at 425lbs for a track car. At least enough for me to be on the constant lookout for a wrecked Z3.

No doubt. That block is 52 pounds lighter and has cross-bolted mains. Not much room for an overbore but that's not really an issue for a street car.

When I corner balanced my car I got 54.3%/ 45.7% front/rear weight balance with me in it, so it's not horrible on paper.

In real life I think it feels great. I love the way it handles. Definately less understeer than an E36 M3.

Since I have the m52 on the stand, can someone recommend scales that can be used to weight it?

This is what I bought. Cheapest thing I found, accurate to +/- 1 lb.

I'll try and measure my m52 tomorrow. M10 measured in at 340lbs .
