    Rebuilt head, exhaust louder?

so i bent the exhaust valves on my s50, dropped the head at machine shop and went ahead and had them replace all the guides/seals and new exhaust valves. put the s50 all together, set the timing all nice and tidy, engine runs nice and smooth, but the exhaust is now even louder than before. i mean shit, it was too loud before, now its rediculous. sounds like i have straight pipes all the way back from the headers. anyone ever heard of such things?

Hmm was your motor in real bad cond b4 the rebuild?? I still don't see really why it would be louder though? Did you do any head-work performance wise? Still don't c what would be the cause though..

Well if you were down on compression It could be possable. Or you have an exhaust leak.

Did you replace the exhaust gaskets when you put it all back together? That would be a quick explanation for the leak..

What is wrong with the SS knock-offs? Mine are just fine..

didnt need to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets, they were only on the car for 4k miles. however, the gaskets from my header to exhaust were pretty shotty looking....

Yeah the head-to-manifold gaskets should be reusable, especially with those kind of miles on them. I'd check for a leak at the header-to-exhaust then, if they are shoddy. If they arent sealing properly I'd imagine that they are pretty noisy.

There's also some goop that you can use with those gaskets. Did you try using any of that?

I think I've seen something like this at Autozone.

u should be able to tell though if it's an exhaust leak or not, i doubt it is that.

doesnt sound like an exhaust leak, just sounds like a loud ass exhaust system, still has same note from muffler, just much much louder. havent driven the e30 in a few days, its blocked in the garage at home, too lazy to move cars around...

Find a shop with a smoke machine and have them test your exhaust for a leak. Or you can put an air hose in your exhaust and seal it up then see if you can hear or feel exhaust leaking out anywhere. If there is no leak then you can live with it or replace exhaust components to quiet it.
