    m50b25tu piston rings

I am about ready to install my cylinder head but have decided to at least hone the cylinders and replace the rings. I searched for new standard rings and they are alot more than I expected. BMA doesn't have them? weird. Pelican has them for $47 per cylinder/piston x 6 =$282.00 The dealership quoted be $70.00 for the entire engine but that deff sounds off considering pelicans pricing!! I am going to call again tomorrow to confirm the price and application. I don't want to cheap out but damn my factory Supra rings where $70 bux.

What rings are you guys using if your are indeed replacing them and doing something similar to me? oem, aftermarket? where to buy and price?

Anyone know the specs of each ring I can't seem to find it anywhere!?

Just incase anyone asks why I am doing this.... some of the cylinders seem to have a very very light glaze or shiny appearance. A friend recommended a re-ring and hone. All my leak down numbers came back with in 4psi of each other. I think this may not be 100% necessary however its a little insurance that I get a good seal. FYI this motor has 64k on it.

    Thoughts & opinions welcome!!

You should be calling Patrick directly at BMA. He can get you anything you need as long as you have a P/N.

I purchased my pistons from MaxSil and they came with a piston ring kit. I can't remember what they were though. I can go check if you're interested.

Haha, figured that!! I even asked him per cylinder or for all off them...$70 is way to cheap!

I am not buying new pistons for this engine its a temporary motor I plan to have my fun with it until it starts showing the effects of abuse, then I will put another engine in its place prob something with a few more cylinders. IMO the m50 isn't worth the cost of a rebuild..or shit even rings apparently, they are a dime a dozen and are getting cheaper & cheaper.

I guess the head will go on tomorrow. I disagree with the light glaze in the 2 cylinders anyways. I had just oiled everything down two nights prior and I am pretty sure thats what my friend was seeing it was at night with crap lighting. My leak down numbers show in my favor also...Its a 50/50 chance I guess I will roll the dice..........

I will call patrick tomorrow morning as one last ditch effort.

        thanks for the info!!!

For a 64k motor, I'm wondering why you're even pulling the pistons out, let alone re-ringing them.

^^^^^...2 cylinder walls kinda sorta look glazed I haven't had a chance to really check it out in good lighting so I am weighing my options at this point. nothing drastic going on yet. Did some calling around and found high prices..the first post explains it all.

I haven't pulled them yet & honestly don't know if I am going to. Why would I do so? Well if the cylinder walls are glazed even a little bit its recomended to at the very least hone and re-ring the motor. Rings wear as do the cylinder walls. On any other engine it would be uber cheap and easy to do not to mention good insurance that w/e min power this motor normally makes is not leaking past the rings or causing excessive crank case pressure or other issues.

I don't understand why this could or would be seen as a bad or questionable thing in any case, rhyme or reason. The motor has 64k of unknown use or abuse, (granted everthing has been great this far) this is a junk yard motor that came out of a 95 325is with a smashed ass. I want it to last a year atleast (which it would prob do easily anyway) if longer then great. I plan to abuse the shit out of it but also take care of it who really knows at this point it could and prob will last longer than I ever would need. At any rate if it only cost me $200 bucks to do this thats a bargain when you add up all the gaskets, head work, cleaning, shipping etc etc it cost to get it this far. I haven't spent alot of money but I am not going to throw away what I have spent either. The main reason for this swap and not a s50, s38 was it is cheap and easy just like my e30. Should be understandable now.
