    found a 2000 z3 m roadster engine/trans

    In my ventures, i just happened across a guy with a '00 m roadster wrecked/basically totaled. I am trying to figure out which version of the s50 that would have come with. wikipedia says it would be a s54b32. that would certainly be worthy of kicking my m42 to the curb. wikipedia also says the engine should have individual throttle bodies. when i looked under the hood, i don't think so, but it was dark and i really wasn't looking for that as i hadn't done any research to that point. so, my question is: which version am i looking at? not taking into account the acquisition cost of the engine/trans/ecu/wiring harness, about how much in dollars am i looking at in periferials to do the swap? I was just thinking that i also ought to have the differential as well, since i believe it will bolt in. what else would be an easy swap/upgrade from that car to an e30?

    peace

      how do i tell the difference between an s50b32, and an s54b32? generally speaking, what will i need to replace to swap this engine into my e30? oilpan? radiator? motor mounts? drive shaft mod?

                  They switched for the 2001 model year.

                  The differential will bolt in. You can use the rear trailing arms and brakes to convert to a 5-lug setup with large rear brakes, as long as you upgrade to the M3/Z3M brakes up front.

                  You can use the transmission (it's a ZF 320).

                  You can't use the Z3M driveshaft. It's too short. You need an E36 M3 or 328 driveshaft.

                  Otherwise it's just like a regular S/M5x swap if you have the S52. The US Z3 never came with an S50B32. That was only available overseas.

                    ^ - yup. s50b32 = euro motor. Never offered in the States. The motor you are trying to differentiate is the s52b32.

                      Everything this guy said.

                      2000 = S52

                      Also, it has a 3.23LSD. That's useful. FWIW S54 ones have a 3.15.

                        how much can you get the car for? you can get a full engine swap, 5-lug (unless suspension is wrecked) and a lot of money from parting out the rest. i'd do it if the price was right
                        No more e30s for me.

                          well, the car is pretty cheap. like-most of you would shit your pants-cheap. but it is apparently pretty trashed also. only has 47,000 miles, though. i am going to look at it in an hour or so. the pax side rear suspension is damaged fwiw. dont know how bad. in the photo he sent me, it looks like at least the trailing arm is bent. the guy is spanish, and a little hard to understand on the phone, but i think he said the power steering rack is damaged as well. knowing myself, i will probably decide i can't live without it when i see it. lucky for me, i have a back yard at a rent house with a big privacy fence that is filling up with parts cars pretty quickly. looks like i will have the choice of 3 transmissions. at this point i don't know which one would be best. my car has a m42/5spd. i have a parts car m20/5spd. this apparently has the 6 speed zf. without knowing anything about it, i would be inclined toward the zf. does anone have any thoughts?

                            Dont worry about the bent trailing arm. You can still use the brakes from both sides and at least the hub from the side that isnt damaged. New hubs arent terribly expensive. The M coupe had top of the line stuff, dont pass it up!

                              No [E36-based] M Roadster/Coupe ever had a 6-speed from the factory.
