Anyone have the VANOS tool for rental?

Just curious if any of you guys would be willing to rent one of these:



I want to replace the VANOS seal and I figure this will make it much easier. I already have the cam blocks, just need the thing that rotates the intake and exhaust chain.

Usually renting it requires paying someone for the tool, then when you send it back, you get 75% of your money, FYI.

You won't need the cam rotating tool. Here's the trick. Lock up the exhaust cam only with one of the cam blocks. When you've unbolted all the bolts that hold the vanos unit and moved everything out of the way that would stop the vanos unit from fully disengaging from the intake cam only then get a 23mm open wrench or an adjustable one and there should be a place in the middle of the intake cam where you could rotate it with those tools as you wish. Loosen the bolts that hold the cam gear on the exhaust side for the intake but don't remove them fully. Just enough that they will spin freely when you rotate the intake cam. Once that's done just rotate the intake cam with the 23mm or adjustable wrench clockwise while pulling slightly on the vanos unit to detach from the intake cam. Should come out with no problem. When slapping it on, just reverse the order, tighten the vanos unit, then adjust the intake cam so it locks up within the cam blocks. Your timing shouldn't be off consider 1) you didn't touch the block or exhaust side, 2) your placing the intake timing at the right angle with the cam blocks.

Hopefully that'll help.

If you can't dislodge the vanos unit spline from the intake spline you could unbolt the bolts (torx bolts) on the exhaust side all the way so you could rotate the intake cam more clockwise if it isn't enough to disengage the vanos unit. I did my vanos unit / timing with no tools at all. Just eyeballing and common mechanic sense. Good luck!

I can rent them to you!! However they are out being used I will email the guy now and see when I will be getting them back. Just incase anyone else is interested I don't ask much basically $20 + cost of the tools (price varies for each tool) and you pay shipping both ways after I have recieved all the tools back and in working condition I will then and only then return your deposit/cost of the tools.

Just putting in there as I'm not there to take the fall when things do go down. =P Just be sure to lock the exhaust cam as its the only cam that shares the timing chain to the crankshaft. Meaning if you keep those two together and you just put the intake cam on tdc (with the cam block) you'll be good to go!

Frank was the guys' name - no clue what his log-in was.

It's been 2 years now since I did it, but I bet a quick search over there might turn up someone who is renting out tools. Just a thought.

IIRC I paid $40 rent with a $150-ish deposit.
