    tranny swap?

    hey guys quick question,

    i have a 318is with a Vanos m50.
I'm still using the Getrag 240 etc,
    M20 clutch/flywheel/starter
    e36 325i driveshaft
    3.73 LSD

im considering buying and using a 95 e36 m3 tranny.
as my gearing is off. :(

do i need any other parts for this transmission to work?

    what are my options?

    thanks for the input. :-D

Why is your gearing off? Should be fine.

For what it's worth I have a 260 overdrive transmission. I love the overdrive for daily driving, it's much better than a direct drive box (which I also have).

what is off in your gearing? what do you want to change? what do you want to use it for?
it can be as simple as swapping differentials man.
        No more e30s for me.

if you do decide to swap trannys, you will need to change the clutch slave cylinder and the driveshaft will likely have to come from a manual e36 328i or m3. if you do get the 95 trans, you won't be able to use the drive shaft from the same car. i am thinking it has a 6 bolt pattern where it mounts to the diff. about the only reason i can see why you would want to use that close ratio trans would be if you track it or drive it hard a lot. i presume you want to get the 240 out of your car because that model has a reputation for being weak. I suppose it also sounds like you have a line on the e36 5 speed from a friend or some way of getting a good deal on it.

the 3.73 axle ratio you listed in your thread also is not very ideal for an m3 close ratio box. 2.93 or 3.23 would work a lot better for you in that case. the m tranny will have a 1:1 ratio output in 5th. your trans should have a .81:1 ratio in your getrag.

In my s52 swap, i have elected use the getrag 260 because my car is a vert and will never be run on a track as long as i own it. my intentions are to simply wake it up with the larger engine.

if after all the above advice, you still wish to go with an m3 trans, i have one from a 2000 mz3 with 46000 miles that i intend to sell. you can pm me if you are interested.

2.93LSD, maybe 3.25LSD on the getrag is the way to go
