    Which Tranny

    Im busy building an s50b32 euro motor, i first decided on using the e30 260 trans so i bought e30 clutch as well as flywheel/started etc. the flywheel has been shaved and all parts balanced.
    Im just wondering if the e36 m3 tranny would be the better option and would my e30 flywheel, clutch, starter etc. work with the e36 tranny?

    I would obviously have to change the driveshaft and diff ratio....

    Please help

    personally i like the overdrive feature of the 260 tranny, but the zf e36m3 tranny is "stronger"... i only see one option here, 6spd zf ;) and depending on what differential you have, you dont have to change it

    your e30 clutch stuff will work with an e30 starter on the e36 tranny

        any e36 tranny (zf 5speed or getrag 250) will fit better. e30 260 requires a custom tranny brace or a combination of funky mounts/spacers, and also needs modification in the shift linkage.

          A little OT but which shift linkage do you use with the ZF? Mine came out of a E46 and the shifting arm part #1 below is to long. I'm just going to cut it and weld it back together but was wondering if the one for the E36 was shorter.

            The G260 can take the power, if you want to save money go with that if you already have it. Then all you need is the custom brace, which can be just a modified 6cylinder E30 brace.

            I'm using the G240 out of the 318is with a M50 and you use the stock brace and mounts off the M42and G240, but power wise, I don't know if it can hold it.

              Who knows which tranny comes out of a 1998 323i with the m52. And can it work with the m50 swap? Thanks!

                /\ It will. Looking at realoem its the same tranny that comes out of a m3.

                  You have the Getrag 250 most likely but could possibly have the ZF check realoem.com and put in your vin #. Either transmission will work for a swap.

                    Well its not my car persay. I have a zf320 from a e46 in my car personally. I was asking for a friend. Ill have to cross check to an m3 or 328. Thanks!

                    * edit *

                    Ah alright. So the M3 is "S5D 320Z" and the 323 is "S5D 250G"

                    So the m3 is 320 ZF vs the 323's 250 Getrag. Cool. I was looking for Getrag spelled out or something haha. Thanks guys.

                        so the clutch and flywheel from a E30 getrag will work with an E36 tranny as long as you use an E30 starter aswell?? Could someone confirm this because i thought the clutch and flywheel differed between the getrag and ZF. thanks, this will help me a lot!

                          yes, it has been confirmed hundreds of times. the clutch and flywheel are different between e30's and e36's. the starter engages on the flywheel, so whatever clutch/flywheel you use, you have to use the matching starter
