Difference between m20 and m50 flywheel?

So my starter (I thought) won't engage the flywheel anymore, it just would whirr. I bought the car swapped and was wondering if I can tell a difference between the two flywheels by looking through the starter hole? I put a new M50 starter in and it still won't engage the flywheel. Could it be anything else other than the wrong starter?

two highlighted words answer your own troubles. if an m20 starter worked before, then stopped working, and a new m50 starter doesnt work...

try a new m20 starter and report back

Well see, I didn't know what the old starter was. I (foolishly) assumed that if it had an e36 tranny then it should have an e36 clutch/flywheel. And Shuck's isn't too helpful, when I went to return the new one they wouldn't let me because they said it had been connected even though when I bought it the guy said I could take it back no problem if it didn't work.

The weird thing is when I went back they tested the new starter to make sure it worked, it did. But I also had them test my old starter (which I should have done but didn't know they did) and it worked as well. Extended and retracted as normal. Weird.

Anyway I'm gonna swing by on Monday or Tuesday and talk to their manager and pick up an M20 starter and report back.

Success! Well not quite. She turns over but won't fire. I also replaced both fuel lines (cracked) that go to the fuel rail. It takes like 10+ tries and it finally starts but immediately dies. I must have forgotten to hook something back up (coulda sworn I got everything though). Will investigate more tomorrow.

Yep changed it around this morning. Still took a while to fire up but I think she's back for good! Thanks!

So an odd problem seems to be arising. Most of the time I start it, it has to be at WOT to start. Else it'll just crank and crank and crank. Any ideas?

Well, if the throttle has to be open, then start with the IAC. Make sure its working. Does it stumble when starting with the no throttle?

Yeah with no throttle, the first time I'll get a couple chugs like it's trying to go then never does. Then the next time I try with no throttle it will just crank, no sign of it trying to start.
