    Help me pick my exhaust!!!

I've had the swap done for a while now, but I am sick of hearing my shitty exhaust. It sounds like a wet fart.....

I just bought some headers.... http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1188854

I have an Ernst Rallye muffler from Carr Industries....http://www.ernst-hagen.de/html-en/pr...mm-premium.php

I think my problem is when I had my exhaust done I didn't specify exactly what I wanted and the guy just gave me some small ass pipes (I think maybe 1.5 inch or 1.75 inch).

I am looking for a nice DEEP tone that isn't gonna give me a headache on my daily drives. I really like the way my Stromung sounded on my ti.

What do you guys recommend I do? What size pipe should I use? Should I keep the Ernst or go with something else?

    TIA!

My magnaflows not to bad I have a dynomax cat its raspy when its cold. Its verry low and deep Sounds great when your on it the only thing I might change is adding a resinator insted of the cat. Im running a single 2 1/2 pipe of stock manifolds

I had them headers on my first swap and I really think thats where most of the rasp comes from.
When I did the was on my black car I used OBD2 headers, 2 inch into a Y pipe, Then 2 1/2 into a high flow magnaflow cat and then into a flowmaster 40 series.

      Heres a video of it.

I had the same exact setup on my first swap but I used the headers that you just bought. I had more rasp or as you say "wet fart".

From the exhaust clips I have heard, I think single 2.5 exhaust tubing is the min. I have the "rasp" prone ebay headers and plan to run into a flowmaster y-pipe then 2.5 --> vibrant resonator--> vibrant muffler.

I think allot of the rasp is in the design of the "y-pipe". I am sure the ebay headers don't help but I have heard decent setups considering they are cheap as hell.

          Here the y-pipe I got.

              s52 -> s52 ss exhaust manis -> 3" -> magnaflow cat -> 3" -> magnaflow muffler... all pipe is mandrel bent.

its raspy when cold, but it can hit some awesome notes. if i were to do it again, i'd go stock e36 m3, maybe slightly larger, maybe 2.5". i'd just like something a little more tame.

Awesome info guys....My headers should be in today. Does anyone know off hand what size is the outlet on these? That Y pipe looks nice. I wonder how else makes one....

So, it seems its going to be hard to stay away from the "rasp". And is it safe to assume that 3" is much louder than 2.5"

There are other y-pipes but I haven't found anything as nice and still semi cheap say around $50 shipped. 3" piping sounds good gives a nice tone but will be louder and deeper from what I have heard. Also with larger diameter pipe you will loose low end torque but may slightly make up for it in the top end. I prefer the torque so 2.5" was my choice. I am sure we could argue about what is best for our engines taking into consideration the other mods you have or plan to have. The best advice I can give is get "quality" when choosing a resonator and muffler.

Here are two links of exhaust notes I like. Which may or may not be your idea of a good sounding BMW. Credits to the owners!!

                    Thanks for the post Mako!

Here is my original 3" exhaust setup: Turbo manifold (i know, i know)> 3" accelerator truck series muffler (26"!)> 3" Vibrant Street Power Muffler

I wish I had a clip of this setup after I installed the ebay headers, it was fucking sick! Unfortunately I high centered a steep driveway on the center muffler with a few people in my car, and the muffler went bye bye.

                    Current setup: Ebay headers> Flowmaster y pipe> 2.5" Borla (? series) muffler>2.5" piping> Same Vibrant muffler

Needless to say I love the new setup. The 3" was too loud and droned like crazy on the freeway! I can't stress enough on how good the Vibrant muffler sounds. I also ran 2.5" with a resontator and the Street Power muffler, which was louder then my 3"! I came to the conclusion that the Vibrant is a pretty loud muffler and should be ran with either a big resonator, or a middle muffler. ;)

I assume you guys are running the 2 inch inlet with 2.5 inch outlet with the ebay headers?

Correct!! I haven't decide how to connect everything yet. I would like v-band but prob wont go that route until I redo everything in stainless later there is always adjusting to be done.

Got my ebay headers yesterday!!!! What do you guys think of this:

                          ebay headers > Y > OEM E36 M3 resonator > Ernst muffler ?

I guess it would be 2.5" cause it seems everyone says the 3" is a little too loud.

Sounds good, no telling what it will really do until its all said and done. BTW I just picked up a nice bmw y-pipe from the passenger side of a 740. $10 bucks from the pick n pull. I am saving the flowmaster for later.
