Thinking about switching to zf, options...

Ok so now I have a 260 with 12lb fly and spec stage 3 clutch, I dont really like the clutch and the cheap TO bearing that it comes with is too noisy, and my shifter is tilted.
Well im contemplating going with the zf, considering all of the work ill be doing to change the clutch, and tilt the shifter, might as well do a little more.

Question is can i use the m20 fly with my m52? if so what combo do i need?, Ive searched and havent quite found what im looking for. Having to get an e36 fly and clutch might break the deal for me as they are significantly more expensive

    Thanks
    Evan

I'm running the M20 flywheel with my ZF trans, I'm using a M50 TO bearing pn:21517521471.

m20 flywheel, clutch, to bearing, and starter work fine in the zf on m5x engines. make sure you get a slave for the zf though, the 260 one wont work.

cool thanks, Im looking into a south bend ofe clutch, its the strongest non puck clutch they have listed on the site, anyone have any experience with these vs. the spec clutch? strength and feel?

what is the purpose of your car? is it a daily driver or a track rat? if its use is a dd,(and also since cost is obviously and issue to you) i would suggest sticking with the 260 unless you can get your hands on a 6 speed cheap. I had a 40,000 mile zf from my mz3 donor car that i sold in favor of the getrag. that trans has a fifth gear that was 1:1 as opposed to .81:1 for the old school. since my car is a daily only, i didn't see any reason to to spin that many rpms going down the highway. i like the clutch feel much better on the getrag also.

i actually went the opposite way with the flywheel trans combo than you intend. i am using the e36 m3 fly with the 260. everything fits together perfectly. the dampened flywheel from the e36m3 has quite a lot more surface area than the e30 325i setup. i agree with you, that had i been required to actually go out and buy that part, it would have been cost prohibitive.

it really isn't a big deal to modify the shifter carrier and linkage anyway. much cheaper than the newer style tranny. assuming you do not have access to a tig, you can just make the cuts you need in your carrier and take it down to a local welding shop. on the high end, welding both parts should cost no more than 50 bucks.

flybox, don't want to go six speed, I would be running a higher (numerically lower) rear if i went with the newer trans so rpms wouldnt be a problem

Jeffrr, so I can use an m50 or m20 to bearing?

Anyone have input on the south bend clutch? I know trm recommends them, this will be a street car with limited track time, once or twice a year.

ya that pn is applied across M50 and M20 models.
