No Mounting Post For Expansion Tank

I have an S52 swapped E30 where the PO mounted the coolant expansion tank to the bracket where the speed control stuff was. I have no mounting post on the driver side front fender and would like to remount a new tank in the factory location. Short of drilling a hole in the fender and welding in a bolt for the tank mount, are there any other options? Does an E36 expansion tank in the "well" next to the radiator work as an option? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Is your car an early model or late model? Early cars had the tank on the passenger side strut tower, late cars had it on the driver side fender well.
