    Starter problems.

I'm doing a m54 swap and thought today I would finally beable to hear it crank over. It did but very slow and sounded horrible. Gear mesh between the flywheel and starter is too tight. Hopefully you guys can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I didnt pull the flywheel so I cant say for sure what it came off of. But it has 138 teeth and a 228 mm clutch disk surface.
The options that the flywheel could be are e21 320/6, e30 323i, e30 325i. I believe any m20 starter should mesh fine with any m20 flywheel so it shouldn't matter what m20 it came off of rite?

    The starter Im using is a reman carquest p/n 17140s for a 91 325I.

The only things I can come up with are some thing wrong with the starter, or I do have a 2002 228mm flywheel that I could have accidentally installed, but those should have 116 teeth rite?

The bendix is not engaging to far but I can see on the ring gear where the teeth on the bendix are hitting the low spots.
    Any thoughts.

have you got a dowel installed over one of the bolts that connects the starter to the trans?

without the dowel the bolts have tiny amount of play during assembly so alignment can be too tight or too loose (in my observations)
