What options is there for the s54 engine.. where i'm from almost all of them is with smg and the smg box is too expensive and not something i would like to convert to a manual.. is it possible to use a 530d/330d 5spd box from e39/e46??

If you search there are definitely good posts on this already, but I'll repeat a good summary that I read here. As far as transmission compatibility, S54 = S52 = S50us = M5x. Treat it like any other 24 valve swap, but be cautious of the power levels relative to the clutch you choose. The E36 ZF trans is probably one of the more typical solutions.
