    I just got owned

    So i just recently bought a 1988 325ix. Bought it off a buddy of mines uncle. From what i was told the car was in amazing shape and completely rebuilt motor, blah blah. Come to find out a good deal of what i was told was bullshit. Anyway i was driving down the road and i started to hear this sort of whining noise, so i was planning to check it out when i got home. I get stopped by a light and when i try to go my car doesn't move and its making this terrible grinding noise. I'm thinking its the rear diff. Anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be. Any help would be great, because im hoping to get it figured out and go buy any parts i need today so i can fix it by monday.

    more details would help. can't be solely the rear differential since it's AWD. is it auto or 5-spd? more details will bring more members willing to diagnose your problem

      its a 5 speed car. when i put it in gear and start to release the clutch it will move slightly if i ride the clutch... if i try to release the clutch fully it will make the grinding noise and doesnt seem to want to move.. i havent really tried to see what happens if i fully release the clutch and try to force it to move because i am nervous that this will do more damage. i have this posted in the general discussion forum and people seem to be saying that my front driveshaft could be stripped and/or my transfer case is blown. any other input would be useful. i plan check it out more thoroughly tomorrow. i was a little too bummed out today after it happend.

        Try jacking up one wheel at a time and spinning it with the other 3 on the ground. Do it with all 4 wheels. They shouldn't spin freely. If they do, the transfer case may be damaged. Then, jack up all 4 wheels off of the ground and put it in 1st gear. See if all of the tires spin, and if it still makes the grinding noise without the weight of the car stressing the drive train. If you're lucky, it's clutch related.

        PS this isn't any standard procedure, it's just what I would do.

              I would NOT attempt to put the car in gear with a running motor while it is on jacks. You WILL trash all of your CV joints, both front and rear. THey are designed to spin when the suspension is loaded, not unsprung and hanging.

              Do yourself a favor and seek out someone that know's IX's. They are a very different animal than standard E30's.

              Your problem is probably with the transfer case.

                yea it makes the noise in all the gears. i pulled the transfer case and all the splines where the front drive shaft goes in are toast until halfway back. they are fine towards the back. and the front drive shaft isn't completely shot but the splines are definitely rounded off and knocked down a little bit. i'm having a hell of a time trying to find a t-case and front driveshaft though. if anybody has a parts guy or a transfer case for sale please let me know.
