Hey folks, I got my first E30 (1991 325ix) about two months ago and have done some basic maintenance, including installing a Z3 shifter while replacing a shattered bearing cup.
Today during some hearty driving the shifter became extremely sloppy and the gears hard to find. I found that if I held the shifter down I could shift fine and the gears felt normal when in them. I investigated when home and found the shifter and bottom bearing cup had popped up out of place, nothing broken and no plastic debris anywhere. I figured maybe I didn’t tab the locking tabs in place when installing my new shifter a few weeks ago. I tried to sit everything back in place, but found that the shifter linkage clinked against the transmission a good centimeter or so before the shifter would be in its correct vertical position relative to the cabin. In other words, the linkage made contact with the transmission well before the bearing cup could lock into place. My suspicion is that the hard driving caused the transmission mounts, which I suspect are old rubber, to fail leading to the transmission to tilt forwards and the rear to rise, popping my shifter onto the cabin. Is this plausible? Has anyone seen this before? I’d like to contribute to this forum and have a good informative discussion rather than bouncing suspicions and guesses off of ChatGPT
