what about buying a rebuilt e36 rack on ebay from the rack doctor for about 150.00. taking all of the parts off that and putting them into an ix rack. i can't say for sure that they will fit, but it is something to think about. this way you get a rebuilt rack with a better ratio in your housing. i rebuilt a few power steering racks when i was in high school because i couldn't afford to pay for a rebuilt in those days. there is nothing to it. on the top where the steering wheel shaft protrudes, there is a dust boot on top. below the dust boot, there is a snap ring that holds the entire assembly in the hole. all thats inside there are a few rubber and plastic o rings. it was suggested to me to put the steering shaft with the seals into the freezer for a 1/2 hour before sliding it back into the bore to shrink the seals down. if an inexperienced 17 year old can do it, most anyone can. its certainly not worth getting your panties in a bunch about.
