I'm an engine guy but transmission I just can't deal with. Any way long story 325XI goes and drives into reverse but won't go forward. The trans is an auto. What do you guys think?

Fluid level ok?
your valve body may be clogged in your IX. cheapest thing to try is replace the filter and seal and fluid (this can be done in your driveway but be sure to jack it up nice and high). But DO NOT flush the transmission.
If new fluid and filter doesn't fix it, your clutch(es) might be cooked. You'll see evidence of this when you remove the pan though, there will be lots of grit or chunks of clutch.
I'm not sure if its possible since your R works but maybe your linkage needs adjustment.88 325 IX DiamantSchwarz - TOURING - waiting...

If the trans has toasted clutch plates, its a HUGE job to repair and cheaper to just buy a trans and swap it in. If the body/interior of the car is in mint shape, it might be worth it, but it also depends on the asking price of the car. A 5spd swap would also be an option.
If the body is so-so, then maybe keep looking. There is a really nice 5spd on e30tech with coilovers and konis and in very good shape all round.88 325 IX DiamantSchwarz - TOURING - waiting...

Yeah, when I bought my iX the auto was toast too. I decided to swap in a 5-speed, as I decided by the time I bought a fresh auto tranny and torque converter, I was halfway ($$$-wise) into the swap. Its so easy on these cars there's really no reason not too. I honestly wouldn't waste money f*ckin around with the automatic too much if you're inclined at all to 5-speed swap it.1991 318iS

Lets see, mine was:
$300 for used tranny/t-case/gearshift components I bought off of here (t-case was blown but I swapped the good VC out of my auto t-case into it)
$135 for a used flywheel off of here (includes $35 to have it resurfaced locally)
$240 for a new Sachs clutch kit (included TOB, clutch disk, pressure plate, and alignment tool)
$100 for gearshift rebuild components (including a new Z3 1.9l shift lever)
$40 for miscellaneous bolts new from BMW (including flywheel bolts, PP bolts, and maybe one or two bellhousing mounting bolts I think a couple might have been different)
$40 for used clutch/brake pedal with clutch master included
$50 from AutohausAZ for new clutch slave/line
$25 for new febi-bilstein shift knob off of ebay (love it, highly recommend it)
$22 for shifter/e-brake boot from Matt-B
$50 for pilot bearing and other miscellany you will surely run up on
Grand total: $1002
Dammit. Remind me never to do that again :(
That seems like a great price. How many miles?1991 318iS
