Auto shifting problem

Just started happening this morning when I left for work. Car wouldnt shift out of 1st gear. Messed around with it in my neighborhood and saw that once the engine temp got warmed up...it would finally shift but its not really a gentle shift. Kind of a hard shift. Ive noticed this since I bought it about two months ago. Sometimes it would shift easy and then sometimes it would shift hard.

So I got to work and about 2 hours later need to run to Walmart. Once again...wouldnt shift out of first. Played aorund some more and tried shifting manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd then to drive. That seemed to do the trick until the motor got warm again.

Im guessing its a solenoid but wanted to see if anyone has any other ideas or has had this issue before.

i don't really know a lot about the 4hp22 so my advice will be somewhat limited. usually the part that screws up with them is when they start slipping. i don't know but i don't think this trans has a solenoid such as you would find on a gm turbo hydromatic 350/400.

if it turns out that the transmission isn't fixable, i have a good used one with a little less than 140k on the clock. i would be willing to ship your way.

hope you get it figured out and that it turns out to be something minor.

      how much might i ask?

and its not slipping....it just wont shift out of 1st until the engine temp is up to normal operating temp....then it will shift...but i have to "manual" shift it a few times before then.

A common issue with these, it is related to the governor and most likely from bad quad seals. The governor is in the tail shaft assembly and can be accessed without pulling the transmission.

Replacement of the governor resolved same problem on our '89 iX.

First winter of ownership, our '89 iX started having delayed 1-2 shift issues when cold. Shift would occur if revs were allowed to rise to 3500 rpm or after 1/2 mile of gentle driving. After the trans finally shifted to 2nd, all subsequent shifts were fine -- no slipping.

Results from a Google search of "ZF 4hp22 delayed shift" (manufacturer/model of auto trannies in e30s) pointed to a sticking governor.

                From (apparently dead now) "http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/faq_part_18.html"]http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co...q_part_18.html"

I have a 4 speed ZF Auto and it sticks in first gear in the morning or when cold and is reluctant to change up from 1st gear. Once the gearbox has warmed up it shifts normally. Why?
The governor valve is sticking, which can be caused by contamination. i.e. clutch plates or other parts disintegrating. The fine debris finds its way past the filter and tends to accumulate in the governor, causing it to stick. A temporary solution is to remove and clean the governor. The problem will often recur as debris from damaged parts continues to build up in the governor. If the problem continues after cleaning the governor then it may be necessary it replace your Autobox.

A quote of $4K to have a rebuilt trans swapped in inspired alternative action.

                1. Trans fluid/filter service at home - no improvement.

                2. Add Seafoam Trans Tune, drove 15 miles, changed trans fluid - delayed shift reduced considerably but got worse again next winter.

                3. Power trans fluid flush at local speed shop - delayed shift gone! Two winters later it was back again though.

                4. Power flush again - worked before but not this time.

                5. Had trans rebuilt (approx $2500) and wrote on ticket to please replace governor. After transmission rebuild, the shop finds that there is still a delayed 1-2 shift. Turns out the mechanic "forgot" to replace the governor. Shop replaces governor at no additional cost. The trans has operated perfectly ever since over the past four years.
