    I'm debating whether or not to remove the pinion.

    if there's crap inside I'd want to clean it out. it means you have to redo the pinion crush sleeve. make sure you mark the hex nut before you remove it - that way you can put it back to the same depth as it was before (might want to do a search on this first).

    I made the mistake on one of my diffs of taking it completely apart before I realized I could have marked the nut before I removed it..

    So, for the pinion just dead blow it out?

    I got this from a salvage yard from a iX with 94,xxx miles. but some idiot removed the cover and left it off. That's why there are small rocks inside.

    VC works. In order to better clean it, can I take down the LSD or should I leave it alone?

    I could, but BMW used a VC back there for a reason - to some extent a clutch diff still needs one axle to have a load on it. a VC doesn't.
