90 ix shifter linkage removal?

So. Said above, how the hell do i get the shifter linkage out of my ix? it isn't hard on my other e30 but apparently from the looks of it i will have to drop the transmission? is this true?

Exhaust system, driveshaft and T-case need to come out . then lower transmission as much as possible at rear to access shifter components. even then its not a fun job.
