    Used Transfer Case

I just bought a used transfer case off of Ebay because my VC is not good in my 325ix. The seller said he drove it around and thinks it's good, but gave no guarantees, but I bought it anyways since it seems difficult to find someone selling a tcase in Northern CA.

Anyways, long story short, I have a un-tested tcase. Should I take it apart and look at the guts, or just slap it in and do the jack test?

Is there anything that I can test before putting it in my car? The splines looked okay, just a bit rusty.

attempt to rotate both output flanges against each other this tests the VC

I did this by hand. Is there a better way to do it?

hopefully you couldn't turn them against each other by hand or its bad news (you need to lock one output flange against something solid ,like the front flange against the case and then put a 32mm socket on rear output flange and try to turn it it should be very difficult if not impossible to turn if VC is good) this basically reproduces the jack test on a bench/floor

Thanks for the double check. I guess I was being too optimistic to think that I would get a good tcase off of ebay. I think the VC is worse in this one than in the one in my car. The 2 outputs are pretty easy to turn against each other.

I was kind of expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. Now I have to decide if I want to rebuild this tcase...

Maybe I should try the VC rebuild that some people have done, but no one has come back after they did it to confirm. http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96804

Does anyone know of someone who has done this successfully and driven for awhile?

only one i know of with any success was in that link you posted on e30tech up north here in Wa ,guy had a few hundred miles on it before not being heard from again (hopefully its still running around), i just saved another used T-case from being dumped and will check the VC to see if its any good if not will add it to my rebuild pile which already has one cut open ,plates straightened and new seals , just need the fluid and time to reassemble and build a jig to Tig weld it back together if all goes well i might start rebuilding them...just not a high priority right now as my IX has a good VC and it would have be a guinea pig for testing a rebuilt one

actually this is the post i was thinking of by euroIX so thatmakes two around that were working for a time
