Ix, Leaky Transfercase, and front diff

I've been trying to look for a thread or posts regarding replacing the seals in the Transfercase, & Front diff on my e30 IX. Looked at FCPEuro, EEuroparts.com, Buntech. I would like to reseal them so I don't have to worry about the leaks and fluid. Just got my IX and I'm worry about running the transfer case dry and having problems/issues later down the road.

here's a start (what can be done in car)
for the front diff from factory manual pages 31-23 ,31-25

T-case rear output seal is basically the same as the trans rear output seal replacement seen here

    rear driveshaft removal

the front driveshaft seals (there are 2 face to face with outermost having spring removed ,making it a dust shield). this link shows shaft removal then seals are pulled and replaced noting orientation and depth (critical)

yes a well maintained leak free IX is a happy IX ,enjoy your Sno-mobile

also if you ever do need it towed make sure its flatbed tow only ! biggest killer of Viscous Coupling is improper two wheel towing and running the T-case dry.

My front output shaft spills out all fluid in about 50km, and case is dry.

Would you guys recommend getting the bmw tools to do this job? Or can they be done with regular hand tools? Some of those bmw guides don't seem the most helpful...

How careful do I need to be about seal depth? I noticed the manuals discussing it briefly. Will this really be just as simple as removing cap, flex disc bolts and shaft, hooking out the 2 seals, and then replacing them?

close (there's an external snap ring to remove also #12 below(holds the plastic shield in place), you can hook the seals or insert screws into them just be sure not to scratch the sealing surface while removing

depth is important so just measure each before removing and insert new to the same depth (i used a deep socket ), tape the front area of shaft to avoid cutting new seals , and put outer seal in backwards with no spring in it (its just a dust shield )

tcase of course will drain with seals removed so will need to be refilled

Speed Racer, you are a life saver. Loving this help.

Real OEM shows a slightly different assemby, see below. Here is the bill of materials for the assembly, showing only one seal (27241224660 ) on the front output shaft, however, when I ordered them, it came with 2 in the bag, both with springs. The assemble shows another seal (27211224636) but it looks like this one is on the output flange. This one I ordered and it has a spring as well and is a different diameter than the 660 seal.

Also, does anyone have a part number for the rear output shaft seal? It looks like it could be 20 in the assembly diagram (which is not labelled), but #20 is called a support.

                  Thanks for the help

Awesome, thanks. Installing outside first would mean that installing the one without the spring would be installed with the gap where the spring used to be facing the tcase or the driveshaft?

take a good look as you remove them you first see a seal in backwards with spring removed lip outwards, once that seal is out you will seal in the correct way (spring and lip facing inwards) measure and remove . now install first seal with spring/lip inwards toward tcase set to correct depth, then remove spring on second seal and install it backwards lip outwards facing driveshaft ,again set to correct depth(factory tools you see do this automatically)
