I need a little assistance with figuring out if the transfer case I got is good or if I need to get a new viscous coupling. I am able to turn the shafts by hand with little resistance and they all spin the same direction.

so i had my gf help me with the transfer case she is a lot weaker than i and was able to turn the transfer case with me holding the other end. then i tested it and there was some resistance but not much. So im going to guess and say that the transfer case needs a new viscous coupling.Float like a cadillac sting like a Bimmer!:)

its okay i got the transfer case for $100 so i was hoping for good but expected bad. But cant complain about the price. is the viscous coupling transferable from a auto transfer case to a manual transfer case if so then the $600 for a new coupling is defiantly more worth it haha.Float like a cadillac sting like a Bimmer!:)

its been done twice that i know of (has to be cut apart/rewelded) once in finland using wrong heavy truck fan clutch fluid and it blew apart at weld . a second here in WA this car http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94330 that i think is still driving around see my post at end trying to find out if its still working...
(all info on both rebuilds is on E30tech IX section)
this is a long read thru but you'll find they decided not to rebuild/sell them due to liability issues
i have one cut apart and another in transit to rebuild but havent sourced the fluid yet.
oh and this one makes three
