    Transfer Case Components Good/Bad

    Hey guys,

I bought a tcase with a bad vc and I ordered a new vc from ecstuning ($580 ugh). I just ripped apart the tcase and it looks pretty decent. I think I'm not going to bother switching out the bearings, they all seem to roll pretty freely and don't have much play in them.

I've taken photos of a few of the teeth/splines, can you look through and let me know if any of them seem problematic? The front axle splines look a little worn and they were covered with rust dust (red) when I got it and I cleaned it up the best I could. I was thinking I'd replace the seals since they are all pretty cheap, but they look pretty decent.

The chain looks like it's in pretty good shape, it only has about 1cm play side to side.

The VC looks like shit. The seals have obviously melted to the point they're completely squeezed out of the VC. There were chunks of the seal all over the tc, and you can see some of the seal still stuck to the outside of the VC.

Also, I noticed that most of the components have some kind of grease on them, is there something I should put on them before I put it all back together? I have the molycote br2...but I only know that it can be used for the outer splines.

    Thanks in advance!

front output splines are in pretty bad shape ,i would be looking to replace that or get the extended drive shaft or it wont be lasting long .everything else looks good.

the grease you found on all the parts was probably the VC fluid that leaked out and mixed with the ATF. just clean it up well and replace all the seals/gaskets

i'll take the bad VC if you want rid of it

buy all new seals and the case half gasket. clean everything really well with diesel fuel or kerosene. go to harbor freight and buy a parts washing brush.

as far as i can tell, the parts in the pics all look fine as far as can be seen from what they show. clean the bearings out really good with the diesel/brush.

obviously, your vc is bad. by the discoloring, it is safe to say that it was overheated. most likely this is from being towed on two wheels. those seals are only good for about 260F. all that goop is silicone fluid that was mixed with the atf lube from the inside of the case. it will come off with the solvent i mentioned above.

Thanks guys! I will look into extending the front shaft since I don't have any way to weld the upgrade. Hopefully the splines on my current Tcase are better and then I won't have to do anything.

Is there a difference between cleaning with diesel vs regular unleaded gas?

I haven't figured out what I'm doing with my VC yet, but I'll let you know if I decide to get rid of it.

There are 2 o-rings on each of the output shafts. What do they do and where can I get replacements for them? I can't seem to find them on the normal BMW diagrams.

You're less likely to burn your shop down using diesel or kerosene.
Your splines show some wear, but don't look too bad overall (I haven't seen your driveshaft, of course). Grease them and reassemble...

i didnt think they look too bad either. they dont look like there was any slippage. just use the best one. use the best chain you have too.
