    Tearing apart an IX engine..

Took a bunch of pics - if anyone needs one for reference..

Bottom end looks different than an e.. (obviously different pistons, different rods, layout of the oil pump, etc. ) - but it got me thinking

is the "ix" - bare bones - block the same as an "i" - cause an "i block is the same as an "e" correct? (again just the bare bones block - no crank, no pistons, just the block..

Found one reference to the deck being .5mm difference between "i" and "e"..

Here a shot of the oil pump..

Na the ix block was made from a completely different cast

It has a different dipstick location and the oil pump is installed backwards compared to other m20s, it even spins in the opposite direction
For the most part people say you can't use anything other than an ix block because of the dipstick and oil pump but a few months ago someone was able to make it work (not very well documented but it can be done) the thread is somewhere in the ix section but not much info
I do think all everything else is the same, including crank and pistons and defenetly the top end

          Very interesting..

Im working on a stroker motor strategy now.. I may use the "ix" h beam 139mm rods.. and stick it into the "e" block.. (instead of tearing out my motor in my 91 325i.. But need to make sure an "e" block is the same as an "i" block so I can determine what custom piston size to order..

This would ensure my down time is minimal..

This guy was able to make the rwd engine work but like I said no substantial info

I also think the oil pan bolts are a little different but if your creative you can make it work

There are definetly stroker ix's on here so hopefully they will chime in
