my ix wont go into 3rd gear at all and grinds if you try to. every other gear is fine except that one. could this be clutch or is transmission shot

If the car's still and 3rd is grinding, your clutch is not disengaging.

And third gear synchro is weak, because in that circumstance it should grind going into all other gears also.

However, if it only grinds when you're moving, and the shifter moves among all gears effortlessly when you're stopped, then the clutch is fine and the blocker ring is worn out.

well i have a known working spare transmission so that might be easier to just replace it
