The bearings aren't too bad to mess with. I'm feeling extremely OCD about the whole project, worrying that I'm slapdashing a t-case together only to have it blow up in the car because I just decided, oh I'll rebuild this.

Well...whatever you do don't do what I did. When I rebuilt my VC in my transfer case I decided to hot tank the transfer case at work. It came out nice and squeaky clean but it washed all the lubricant out of the bearings. Now I have a whir from the bearings. BUT, I've been running it that way for almost 3 years now. Annoying that's all...I have the bearings but I haven't found time to replace them yet.

It may seem like a daunting task when you pop it open but its really not that bad. You've got this!

Oh! So that's what happened! I think I did the same thing. After I put mine together, it whirrs now. It's also been 2 years with no issues and clean oil, but just makes noise. I thought it's because I reused a worn bearing but maybe I washed the lubricant out of the bearings too.

Did you put it in a hot tank or spray a bunch of brake cleaner on it perhaps? I was super bummed when I put it back in and it started whirring. I'm pretty sure the reason they make sound is that I left the case sit on the shelf after I hot tanked it while I rebuilt the VC. I think the ball bearings started to form surface rust with no lubricant (the ATF) inside the bearings. The noise hasn't got any louder over the years....

I don't remember what exactly I did to clean it, but I took apart 2 tcases, took the bearings that "spun better" and put it back together with a new VC. I should have just bought new bearings:). How did you rebuild the VC? Did you cut it on a lathe and weld it back together?

Yeah, cut it apart, filled it back up and had my friend weld it back together. There is a thread that I started on e30tech.com..can't link to it right now because the site seems to be down. I've been driving the car every day since and its still working great...especially in the winter.

I almost hot-tanked it at the request of my machinist buddy but I just wanted to be done with the damn thing.

Was wondering if anyone else has ran into this issue: putting the rear driveshaft back in and it doesn't seem long enough? I have the flexdisc on the end of the t-case and I stick the centering pin into the center of that thing and the other end of it doesn't hook up with the.... differential (?).

My car is at a fellow enthusiasts garage so I can't just go outside and look at it.

                  Am I missing something?

There's a rather stiff plunge fitting just forward of the U-joint. If you can get all the bolts started at once, then you should be able to use them to pull it back out to reach.

So almost done putting everything back on.

I took like #18-30 essentially off after I took the t-case brace off. Can't seem to figure out how to, idk, tune it or whatever.

Anyone have any experience with this?

When the shifter is in park, the trans should be in park. When the shifter is in low, the trans should be in low.

So park all the at the top, so shifter all the way at the top?

How/where do I do the fluid change on the transfer case? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
