Short shifter install help. 88 ix

Soooo stupid me went to install my z3 short shifter kit. And I quickly realized that the transfer case was in the way...

Is there a way to install the short shifter without dropping the transfer case? If not what all do I have to drop. Exhaust? Also any links to writes up about what I have to drop and what not would be awesome. Thank

this thread should have all the pictures you need.

    Drop exhaust
    Remove front Driveshaft
Unhook rear driveshaft at guibo, lay down gently.
    Undo trans->transfer case guibo
    Loosen transfercase mounting bolts (13mm)
    undo bottom TC bolts
remove shifter console for easier access, and use a swivel to get the top 2 bolts.
carefully lower TC...you should now have room to get to it.

Thanks! also heard from a local that I can just lower the muffler down and the entire trans without dropping anything and i can reach around it. Any truth to this?

My shifter right now is like dragging a noodle through a bowl or ramen....

From what I understand, it is possible, especially if you have thin noodley arms yourself. You can try it, but if it doesn't seem like it's working, just drop the TC.

I dont see how you would get your arm over the TC And then get the bitch clip out, get the new trans nub piece on etc...theres no way on the ground at least. maybe with a lift.

here are a few clips before and after with delrin replacements.

If you don't want to pull the tranny, it is possibly to undo the top bolts on the transfer case if you go through the shifter hole in the chassis. Makes it a lot easier than pulling the whole trans. You should be able to get the trans down far enough to where you can reach up with a small flathead and get that clip off.

If you have a super loose shifter to might also look at replacing the shit knuckle on the trans. It might be super worn out and loose.

Id just suck it up and pull it out.
Honestly it might feel like more work but its more easy work rather than "less work" thats totally awful and soul crushing to try to get done.
Plus if you remove the transfer case its super straight forward to replace the selector shaft seal.
