subframe bushing press

whats up guys,

so the ix has rear end clunk over bumps. decided to pull the rear subframe and replace bushings and rtabs as well.

i rather not burn bushing to pull them out. press would be better option for me. i've been looking around for bushing press kit and would like all your advice/experience.

will this kit work to press out subframe bushings and rtabs out ?

I found that even if you try to push it out with those kits, you will have to end up using some heat. I had to get my mechanic to use his bushing press machine to get my old ones out, but even then he had to use a bit of heat.

yea i was going to torch and heat up housing before press out regardless. so this kit will work ?

Burning the bushings is unnecessary. All you need to do is heat up the housing, and the bushing will slide out. Most people (including myself in the past) think that you start by burning the rubber center out, but it is the rubber between the aluminum sheathe and the subframe that holds the bushing in. Melt that and the bushing slides out.

3/4"x 14 tap and allthread, drill out bushing, knock out bolts, thread aluminium bushing center, put two pieces of angle iron through rubber, metal plate with 3/4" hole, put over allthread in aluminium center, tighten against angle iron, impact that fucker till it makes an awful noise and pops out of the car, then cut the outer metal and extract it, installation is simple

I'm continually surprised that people don't get that, BUT...

The first time I saw a bushing push itself out (not on a BMW) from heating just the shell, I was pretty surprised.

the subframe bushings push out easily enough with a 20 ton press, i set up two sockets of the same height to go in the notches and used a big 36mm socket to push them down and out
as for the trailing arm bushings
no heat needed, again a 36mm socket on the side you want to push it to and a 12mm socket on the other steel sleeve and put it in a 8 inch c clamp, tighten the shit out of it and wait.
After a few minutes it will have felt as if it loosened up, once that happens tighten again and wait for it to get loose, it slowly but effectively pushes the bushing out.
i drove them back in with a little bit of tire shine and the same technique. easy as could be.

i purchased the press kit removed bushings and pressed new bushings in with ease. i highly recommend this tool. fcabs should go smoothly.
