    vacuum hoses

I am having trouble starting my 88 325ix ix i just purchased. I noticed that the two vacuum hoses that run from the throttle body to the crank case are disconnected at the throttle body. The hoses are just plugged. Should these two hoses be connected? I couldn't find the diagram on realoem's web site showing the part numbers for these. I'm assuming I can use any vacuum hose.

    thanks

Are the two hoses items #18 and #19 in the diagram above? If so, those are for heating the throttle body to avoid icing during extremely cold temperatures.

Hard starts are not iX specific. You might get a larger number of responses posting in the M20 section. Have you already gone through all normal tune up procedures - plugs, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, etc.? Also, it is highly recommended to obtain a Bentley e30 series service manual. There is a decent drivability troubleshooting section in the book.
