    Short shifter recommendations

    Hey Guys!

I found a rust free silver 88 ix coupe in Montana that will be shipped to me in VT in the coming weeks! Very excited! Pics to follow when I get the car.

It needs shifter bushings according to the owner. I would like to redo the whole shifter assembly to add a short shift kit.

I have done some research but wanted to get some real world ix driver opinions on which is the best way to go. Let me know what you guys are using and your thoughts.

    Thanks!!

Thanks! So just order the stock Z3 1.9 shifter assembly and that will get me everything I need?

You can also get the DSSR from either Gargistic or UCC

          change the following:

          shift rod joint
          shifter center cup bushing
          shift lever bushing (front)
          shifter support bushing (rear)
          yellow selector rod washers

i would also install a '95 M3 shift lever at the same time, it's my favorite OE shift lever. nice and notchy throws, without being aggressively short. overall shifter height is similar to that of a stock e30 shift lever.

All the stock shifter parts for the iX *EXCEPT* use the shift lever from a Z3 1.9

And I have Z3 1.9 shifter in my car as well; really like it.

              Ok thanks guys!
Does the transfer case need to be dropped to do the work?

+1 on th eZ3 1.9 shifter. If I recall correctly the E46 325 and 330xi had the same one fitted. I got a second hand one which had little use, they are pretty expensive new from BMW (+/- 100€)
I also went with a new bushing for the "shifter ball" and delrin bushings for the carrier, this did ad some transmission noise into the cabin though

Doing some googling and there is alot of conflicting info about whether or not the transfer case needs to be dropped to replace all the shifter parts (nothing conflicting about the "Passion is timeless" quote however). Anyone else with experience doing this job care to comment?

If you're only swapping out the shifter, no need to drop anything. If you're replacing everything shifter related, then yes, you will have to drop it. "Passion is timeless"
