I used the OEM BMW touch-up paint to fill in some small scratches on my car, but of course the brush is wider than a tiny scratch. Is there any way to smooth out the appearance of these touch-ups? Polishing compound? 2000 grit sandpaper?

Single stage paint? If so, start by scraping the excess off with a square razor blade (be CAREFUL when doing this). Then, starting with 800 grit sand paper, sand smooth, working your way up to 1500 or higher. Then polish with polishing compound. If done correctly, you almost won't be able to see the chip anymore.
